Originally a trained florist operating three family owned Glasgow shops, Elaine Fairfull became aware of the increased competition from supermarkets and garage forecourts, which was eroding the floristry business in the late 1990s. It was having a direct impact on her company.

Not one to sit and watch her own business erode, Elaine began to look at ways of expanding and diversifying. Based on her experience within her own shops, a clear decision was reached to import products for the gift industry trading as Fairfull Ltd.

"I recognised the growth in home interest, so my first venture was to introduce the UK to Yankee Candles from the United States, which has since become a household name," said Elaine.

"Having gained the confidence and quickly learned the complexities of the import business, I then travelled to China, Bangkok and Germany, to continue to source quality and affordable products for the UK market. "

Today Elaine imports 11 different brands, supplying to over 2,000 customers throughout the UK and Ireland including high street retailers, Lakeland Plastics, Pastimes, Dobbies and Ortak. All products are aimed at the gift market and include LED Lounge Lights, an innovative range of LED candles, lanterns and lamps, Camille Beckman personal care and Carol Wilson fine art stationery. A new Fairfull annual catalogue was launched earlier this year, featuring a host of new products for UK gift retailers.

Elaine, who has never allowed her dyslexia to stand in her way, works from her Kilmacolm base where she employs 15 people, continues to run the three stores and travels the world to source products - and all the time keeping on top of the complex global laws on importing.
