BPI Packaging Services is gearing up for some major developments, as it invests in increased production capacity for refuse sacks and air pillow bags. It is also adding to its workforce of 120 people to facilitate the 24-hour production process.
Part of British Polythene Industries PLC, Europe's largest producer of polyethylene (PE) films, sacks and bags, the Greenock company produces a wide variety of film products for retail and industrial use.
"As well as extending refuse sack production with three new lines, two air pillow converting machines are being brought in from Canada in June, as demand for the product increases," said Production Director, Jim Montgomery. "Air pillow bags are used for protecting packaged goods in transit, an area that has seen huge growth predominantly due to internet trading.
"To cope with increased production, we have a recruitment plan in place with the local Jobcentre Plus team to expand our current workforce. We have already taken on 12 new operators with around a further ten scheduled to come on board in the next few months."
BPI has been a consistent employer locally and benefits from the services of a number of long term employees who have honed their skills over 25 years and more. Only recently three generations of the same family were working together within the same department. It has also had a long running commitment to develop employees through vocational training at all levels and industry-specific City & Guilds certification.
As well as its ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification, the Greenock site was one of the first companies in the UK to attain the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System back in 1995 and currently has the longest running accreditation in the country.
