As a social enterprise firm providing meaningful, sustainable employment and development opportunities for disabled people, Haven Products offers a variety of services for blue-chip clients, as well as public sector organisations, from its three Scottish factories at Greenock, Hillington and Inverness.

Just two years ago, its Board recognised that change was needed in order to achieve their vision of increasing and broadening the range of opportunities offered to disabled people. The Twenty One Programme was born, representing what was seen as a radical step of switching the company from a mixed-ability staff working 38 hours per week to a mainly disabled workforce representing 86% and operating on a shift pattern of 21 hours.

"The turnaround has been dramatic, improving quality and productivity in our packaging and sub assembly work and resulting in more jobs," said David Whyte, Managing Director, Haven Products. "We now run an efficient, commercially viable enterprise, delivering services to some of Scotland's largest companies who find us an extremely flexible, reliable and competitive supplier."

Employees receive in house training relative to their roles. Two work experience placements are offered annually to local special needs school, Glenburn, with some pupils entering employment following their assignment. Additional advice, encouragement and support are given to its 5th and 6th year pupils.

By employing disabled people, Haven helps increase their independence, while making an important contribution to the way business perceives the work and value of disabled people in society. This has been recognised by a Scottish Business in the Community's Award and selection for a UK Awards for Excellence title.

"Income is reinvested to ensure meaningful jobs are provided for those who may never have been given the chance to earn a wage before. We are rewarded with a highly motivated and committed workforce and an enviable attendance record of 96%," said David.

"We are proud to be challenging perceptions by championing disabled employment, while delivering high quality services to customers, adding value to the economy and, above all, the lives of our employees and their families."
