Greenock Medical Aid Society has provided care for vulnerable groups for more than 200 years. It has grown in size and complexity to become a multiple-based care organisation with responsibility for three premises at Glenfield, Bagatelle and Bagatelle Court, caring for around 77 residents and 28 tenants.
"With the appointments of a Chief Executive and Director of Care comes a new management structure and even greater professional support, all established ahead of the imminent retirement of our Matron, Sandra Blair," said Chairman Ian Halliday. "Sandra has been fundamental to the success of the Society since she joined us in 1977.
"A continuous upgrading programme has operated for the past decade, ensuring accommodation within the homes meets the highest standards. Over the last four years, single room availability has increased from 50% to 81%. Hotel-style accommodation has now been added following construction of our Bagatelle extension last year, which created an additional 15 bedrooms, each with en-suite facilities.
Relatives seeking information about the Society and its facilities are provided with an information pack containing Resident's Guide, the latest inspection reports and rates of charge. Visits to view the vacant accommodation are arranged to suit the requirements of incoming residents and their relatives.
Capital expenditure in 2004/2005 exceeded £1.5m. Annual revenue expenditure now exceeds £1.5m, benefiting the local economy with an annual wage bill of £1.2m.
"Still the Society has to raise between £12,000 and £16,000 annually to meet the care gap for those residents who do not have the financial resources to fund their care," said Ian. "As this sum rises each year due to the inadequate assistance provided by government, we must depend on the generosity of the local community to help fill the gap."
The Society employs more than 120 staff with a wide variety of qualifications. Training arranged in liaison with James Watt College features largely in the staff development programme. In 2003, the Society won the prestigious Scotland's Learning Employer of the Year Award. |
