John McLeary took a considerable gamble when he invested a large amount of capital expenditure in setting up Pack-2-Solutions within the glass/whisky industry. What made it even more ambitious was that the company had no experience in that industry or any potential contracts.

John's strategy on the other hand was crystal clear. Gain market entry by investment in technology and training, combining his previous expertise in high volume electronics manufacturing and inspection, and adapting intensive and defined criteria from that field into a process inspection model for the glass/whisky industry.

"We were two years in development, designing a real time data process that gives customers secure access to operational data via the internet," said John. "Integrating a complete wireless technology system within the shop floor helped us develop a specialised IT platform, quite unique for the industry.

"In conjunction with James Watt College, Job Centre plus, Scottish Enterprise and British Glass, we helped develop an intensive three-week training programme, allowing long term unemployed to gain valuable work experience - once again unique to the industry."

Pack-2-Solutions also accepted its own social responsibilities and signed up to Jobcentreplus New Deal/Training for Work programmes.

Within eight months, Pack-2-Solutions had taken on two of the country's largest distillers and glass manufacturing companies and also achieved bonded status, yet again very unique for such a young company. Its original business plan anticipated 12 full time employees by the end of its first year. Now just ten month on, it employs 20 - 55% from long-term unemployed, 40% from the James Watt College course and 5% from youth training.

As it settles into its state of the art 15,000 sq ft facility at Lynedoch Industrial Estate, the future looks bright for this burgeoning business.
